Jen grad student for the MUTT Lab

Jennifer Frederick

I joined the Clinical Science PhD program at FIU in 2019 and I graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 2017 with a B.A. in psychology and in creative writing. Before joining Dr. Ng and the MUTT lab, I worked as a research assistant at the National Human Genome Research Institute in the Neurobehavioral Clinical Research Section. My research interests include how to improve the effectiveness of psychotherapy for youth with depression and anxiety, and uncovering the mechanisms of change behind the psychotherapy process.

I am a doctoral student in the Clinical Science PhD program and a member of the Mechanisms Underlying Treatment Technologies (MUTT) Lab at FIU. I completed my Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Psychology with a minor in Biology at University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Before joining Dr. Ng and the MUTT Lab, I was a research assistant at Brown University's Alpert Medical School. Under the mentorship of Drs. Jessica Peters, Lisa Uebelacker, and Shirley Yen, I worked on a hatha yoga intervention study for adolescents with depression and an fMRI study exploring anger rumination in the development of borderline personality disorder in adolescents.  My research interests include utilizing technology to improve personalization, delivery, and accessibility of evidence-based treatments for youth with mood disorders in community settings.

I joined the Clinical Science PhD program in Fall 2021. I graduated from Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) in 2018 with B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Health Education.  Before joining the MUTT lab, I served as a clinical research assistant for faculty in the Department of Psychology at IUPUI, as well as researchers at the Indiana University School of Medicine – Department of Pediatrics. As a future clinical psychologist, I aim to advance the design, evaluation, and implementation of effective interventions that identify and treat depressed youth in healthcare settings. I am particularly interested in uncovering mechanisms that influence how adolescents respond to depression treatment in healthcare settings like primary care. My current research involves conducting a meta-analysis evaluating the overall effect of psychotherapy treatments in primary care setting for depressed and anxious youth.

I am an incoming first-year clinical science Ph.D. student at FIU and a member of the MUTT lab. I graduated from DePauw University with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Mathematics. After graduation, I joined a neuroscience lab at the Department of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine under the mentorship of Dr. Jonathan Power, using fMRI to investigate neural correlates of perinatal depression. My current research interests involve identifying risk factors of affective disorders and advancing the development of early prevention and intervention across adolescence. More specifically, I am interested in applying EMA, wearable physiological monitoring, and neuroimaging in my work to develop subtypes of depression and design adaptive, personalized interventions and treatment to maximize the benefits.
